The Technique Intensive

We are thrilled to share with you a brand new initiative: the Piano Technique Intensive Workshop. Throughout our careers as educators, we have encountered numerous talented pianists who have experienced “holes” in their technical skills training, and very few opportunities to truly address them due to the constant demands of learning new repertoire for various gigs, jobs, and school. However, as you all know firsthand, being able to rely on a solid pianistic technique is crucial for a long, healthy and successful career as a pianist.

Therefore, we have created a 2-week workshop from May 22nd through June 3rd 2022 that will focus only on the technical aspects of playing the piano, and reached out to a fantastic group of faculty that are not only brilliant pianists but also renowned pedagogues:

In addition, you will work with LSU faculty Ana Maria Otamendi and Elena Lacheva, as well as two dazzling pianists, Dr. Diana Thacher and Dr. Liliia Oliinyk.

You will have a private lesson at least every other day (3 or more per week), as well as observe lessons every day. In addition, we will group classes that pertain to the piano technique:

  • Using your arm and your natural arm weight
  • True legato
  • Pedaling
  • Releasing tension
  • Posture
  • Fingering
  • Alexander Technique (3 or 4 sessions)
  • Practicing effectively

Tuition is $700 for all two (2) weeks, or $400 for one (1) week. Small scholarships are available. If you are interested in participating, please fill out our application form. We offer on-campus housing for $240/week, or we can also help you find other housing options in the Baton Rouge area.

Deadline to apply is April 25th, 2022

If you are a CPI alum, or if you applied to CPI 2022 for the first time, you don’t have to pay an application fee!

Diverse and intensive

The technique intensive was a great time to focus on bringing technical issues to light and addressing specific issues I had but never could answer. The amount of instruction from different teachers was incomparably valuable and guarantees that at least one of them will substantially help you. The personalized guidance and sitting in other’s lessons was helpful, but I hope that in future years there will be more focus on discussing technical issues for everyone (eg session discussing tremolo, trills, scales, etc). Very happy I attended

TI at CPI

Thank you to the Technique Intensive at the Collaborative Piano Institute team for this unique and invaluable program! I highly recommend this program to pianists as a wonderful way to spend time with one’s technique and technical journey.

The opportunity to receive feedback from each of the world class faculty members was endlessly beneficial and gave fresh and useful perspectives.

In leaving, I felt renewed with a myriad of resources and new ideas to continue the never ending journey of self improvement.

A Great Help for Healthy Playing

The Technique Intensive at CPI was a great prelude to CPI. It was therapeutic to spend two weeks devoted to nurturing my skills simply as a pianist (which is where we all begin, before taking a more focused career path like pedagogy, collaborative coaching, or concertizing). Beyond simply hearing lectures and master classes, getting one-on-one time with at least five different piano instructors was invaluable. Group discussions about technique and musicianship were fun and enlightening. Everything had a focus toward healthy music-making at the piano, which can often be forgotten or misunderstood.

FANTASTIC PROGRAM

The Technique Intensive Program at CPI is an incredible opportunity for pianists and collaborative pianists alike. It is a festival unlike any other festival out there in the sense that it truly gives participants an opportunity to be vulnerable and address issues in piano technique that are particular to each pianist by working full immersion with world class educators and artists.
Through individual lessons, masterclasses, observing other's lessons and targeted practice, it is impossible to end this festival not feeling a renewed enthusiasm and deeper knowledge on how to address our distinct weaknesses in order to achieve even more growth and mastery in our playing.
Each and every member of the faculty has been incredibly encouraging, patient and meticulous in leading us participants on the best road to success and there was a true sense of comradery and fellowship between all involved.
I truly cannot praise the Technique Intensive program enough and I strongly encourage anyone looking into it to participate and experience the remarkable progress it can provide

Creating Space for Creativity

The Technique Intensive was a terrific time to consult technical challenges as a collaborative pianist. It was an open experience, where participants were able to ask questions every step of the way: private lessons, observed lessons, masterclasses, and lectures. My creative capacity has expanded thanks to the CPI staff who worked patiently & diligently to encourage strong, relaxed movements on the keyboard.
